Becoming a licensed nurse in Sweden as an international applicant is a structured process, and the Swedish language requirement is the foundation of everything. Since all clinical work, documentation, and patient communication are done in Swedish, mastering the language is the first and most important step.
🇸🇪 Swedish Language Requirements for International Nurses
1. Language Requirement for Academic Admission
Before you can enter the Complementary Programme for Nurses (the mandatory 1–1.5 year program for non-EU nurses), you must prove advanced Swedish proficiency. Universities accept either:
A passing grade in Svenska 3 or Svenska som andraspråk 3
OR a passing score in TISUS
TISUS (Test in Swedish for University Studies) is the official exam used by all Swedish universities. Passing it is equivalent to C1 level Swedish and shows you can read, write, and speak at an academic level.
2. Language Requirement for Professional Practice
Even after the complementary program, you must demonstrate Swedish at C1 level to safely communicate in the healthcare environment. This is required by the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) before granting licensure.
🩺 The Complete Path to Swedish RN Licensure (Step-by-Step)
Here’s how the process works from start to finish:
Step 1 — Educational Assessment
You submit your foreign nursing qualification to Socialstyrelsen. They review your documents and confirm what additional training you need. No Swedish is required at this stage.
Step 2 — Complementary Programme for Nurses
If you are found eligible, you must complete a bridging or complementary program at a Swedish university. This program lasts between 1 and 1.5 years and prepares you for Swedish healthcare practice.
To be admitted, you must already have passed Svenska 3 or TISUS.
Step 3 — Knowledge Test for Nurses
You will take both theoretical and practical examinations that evaluate your clinical skills. These exams are conducted entirely in Swedish, so high-level language proficiency is essential.
Step 4 — Swedish Healthcare Laws & Regulations Course
You must complete a mandatory course covering the structure, laws, and ethical responsibilities of Swedish healthcare. This course is also taught in Swedish.
Step 5 — Clinical Service (Practical Training)
You complete a supervised clinical placement, typically lasting around three months. This experience requires strong communication skills, making C1-level Swedish mandatory.
Step 6 — Licensure Application
Once all requirements are met, you apply for your nursing license (legitimation) through Socialstyrelsen. You must submit full evidence of your Swedish language proficiency.
